Nonimmigrant Visas

Danish citizens and citizens of certain other countries seeking to visit the United States for short-term business or tourist travel may be eligible for the Visa Waiver Program/ESTA. Visit the ESTA website to review the eligibility requirements and apply.

Please consult the Important Information on Current Travel to the U.S. page for additional information about current travel requirements and visa appointment information.

All visa applicants must bring a self-addressed envelope with pre-paid postage to their visa interview. The envelope should have 96 DKK in stamps or postage for addresses in Denmark and 132 DKK in stamps or postage for addresses in Greenland or the Faroe Islands or Sweden.

The Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen is responsible for providing visa services to those seeking to enter the United States for a temporary period and for those wishing to take up indefinite or permanent residence in the United States.

Please visit our Global Support Services (GSS) website for complete information on applying for a nonimmigrant U.S. visa, including a directory of nonimmigrant visa categories.

Applicants should plan to apply well in advance of their scheduled travel.  We suggest several weeks in advance when possible.  We are able to expedite visa appointments only rarely in the following circumstances:

  • In case of a personal or family medical emergency requiring travel to the United States.
  • The death of an immediate family member in the United States (spouse, child, parent, or sibling).
  • C1/D airline or shipping crew with upcoming travel

Applicants planning to travel to the United States for business or tourism purposes must demonstrate that they are properly classifiable as visitors under U.S. law.  Potentially useful information may include evidence and documents that demonstrate an applicant’s ties outside of the United States, the purpose of the trip, intent to depart the United States, and arrangements made to cover the costs of the trip.  As a general rule it is better to prepare more documentation on the day of the interview than less.  However, documents are not required to qualify for a visitor visa per se.

Airline tickets do not constitute proof of intent to depart the United States.  The Embassy advises applicants to be prepared for possible delays and not to make final travel arrangements until the visa is printed.

Depending on individual circumstances, applicants may provide additional documentation substantiating the trip’s purpose and specifying the nature of binding obligations, such as family ties or employment.

Approved visas will be ready approximately 7 business days after your interview.  Visas will be mailed through Post Nord registered mail using the envelope and postage you provided at the time of your interview. You can track your passport on Post Nord’s website using the tracking number provided during the interview.

If you are going to the United States as an official representative of your government, certain international organizations, or the military, please see our page with information regarding visas for diplomats, other government officials and foreign military personnel.  There is no visa application fee when applying for these visa classes.
