Current regulations reflect the long standing policy of the Department of State that no person should be in possession of more than one valid, or potentially valid, passport at any one time unless under circumstances specifically authorized by the Secretary of State.
The issuance of a second, concurrently valid passport should be considered an exception to the regulations, and is to be approved on an individual basis only where justified. The validity of a regular American passport is ten (10) years. The second, concurrently valid passport will be limited in validity for two (2) years. This passport is not extendable.
For more information about second passports please visit the State Department Official website.
To apply for a second passport, you may use the following guidance to prepare:
1. Fill out form DS-82
Complete FORM DS-82 online, and print it out. Do not print the instructions as you are to use this website instead. At ‘Mailing Address’ list your Danish address, even if it is only temporary. You may sign the form at home. Applications filled out by hand may require longer to process.
2. Social Security Number Requirement
You must provide an answer to question no. 5, even if you do not have a Social Security Number or you do not remember it. Do NOT list your Danish CPR number.
For an applicant that does not have U.S. Social Security Number, you must submit a statement.
On your application form you must write the word ‘NONE‘ at item no. 5 on your DS-82 or DS-11 form. Do NOT write zeros.
This statement will work only once. Upon receipt of your new passport you must apply for a Social Security Number asap. The application begins by contacting the Federal Benefits Unit at the U.S. Embassy in Oslo, Norway
3. Proof of U.S. Citizenship
Present your most recently issued full validity (10-year) U.S. passport, with a photo copy of the biographical information page.
If you have been issued a previous 2nd passport, present that too.
4. One 2"x2" (5 x 5 cm.) U.S. format color passport photo
Provide one U.S. format photo: 2″ x 2″ (5 x 5 cm.) passport photo. We cannot process the smaller Danish format photos! Click here for guidance on the perfect U.S. passport photo. Make sure to watch the video.
5. Supporting Evidence for a Second Passport
A second passport is a rare exception to the One Passport Rule. To support your application for a second passport, please present:
- An original signed written request from your company or organization, preferably on letterhead paper, explaining in detail why a second valid passport would be required.
- An Affidavit explaining in detail why your travel needs would warrant the issuance of a second passport.
Bring a plain photocopy of:
- your passport’s biographical information page, and
- your previous second passport, if any, and
- any supporting documents as applicable to your application.
Copies of the forms are not required.
7. Passport Application Fee
You can pay the appropriate passport services application fee in DKK KR, in U.S. dollars, or by credit card. Note that we can only process credit card payments if the card holder is available to sign the payment authorization slip. When paying in cash, please try to bring exact change.
