Message to U.S. Citizens: U.S. Embassy Copenhagen Voting Event – Tuesday, September 6 from 3-6pm

The U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen will host a voter registration and ballot submission event on Tuesday, September 6 from 3:00-6:00 pm.

All U.S. citizens eligible to vote are welcome to visit the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen on Tuesday, September 6 between the hours of 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm for assistance with registering and mailing election ballots.  The Consular Section is located at Dag Hammarskjölds Allé 24, 2100 Copenhagen.

Interested U.S. citizens do not need to register for this event; however, please be reminded of the following access and security procedures:

  • You must bring your U.S passport or other valid photo ID with you.
  • All visitors to the Embassy are subject to security screening.
  • You will not be permitted to bring electronic devices, including cell phones, inside the facility. You may not bring a laptop or any other large electronic device with you to the Embassy.  Smaller electronic items must be stored with the Embassy guards.

U.S. citizens may also drop completed ballots in the ballot box at the Embassy’s security screening area Monday through Friday between 8:30am – 5:00pm.  U.S. citizens do not need to enter the Embassy to drop off completed ballots.  Consular Services will mail completed ballots to the U.S.

All ballots dropped at the Embassy will be sent by diplomatic pouch to the United States sorting facility free of charge.  You will need to place your ballots in postage paid envelopes or in envelopes bearing sufficient U.S. postage, for them to be delivered to the proper local election authorities once received by the U.S. sorting facility. Please be advised that standard transit time from Denmark to the United States is four (4) weeks.  Please plan accordingly to ensure your ballot arrives on time!

Registering to vote and submitting a ballot is fast, easy, and can be done from anywhere in the world!  Follow a few simple steps to vote in the 2022 U.S. elections:

  1. Register to Vote:  Start by confirming your voter registration with your state.  Some states require absentee voters to register annually, so you may need to re-register.  Go to fvap.gov to connect to your state’s voter portal to register to vote, request a ballot, and more.
  2. Request Your Ballot: Most states provide the option to request ballots through their state election portals, which you can easily access via FVAP.gov.  You can also choose to complete a Federal Post Card Application (FPCA). The completion of the FPCA allows you to request absentee ballots for all elections for federal offices (President, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House of Representatives),including primaries and special elections, during the calendar year in which it is submitted.  FPCA forms that are correctly filled out and include a signature and date are accepted by all local election officials in every U.S. state and territory.  FVAP’s easy online assistant at fvap.gov/FPCA can assist you with completing the FPCA.Whether you request your ballot through your state’s portal or the FPCA, we encourage you to select the option to receive your ballot electronically (by email, internet download, or fax) when available.  This is the fastest way to get your ballot and ensures you have it in time to return a completed form before your state’s deadline.
  3. Receive and Complete Your Ballot:  States are required to send out ballots 45 days before a regular election for federal office, and states generally send out ballots at least 30 days before primary elections.  Most states allow you to confirm your ballot delivery online.
  4. Return Your Completed, Signed Ballot:  Some states allow you to return your completed ballot electronically.  If your state requires you to return paper voting forms or ballots to local election officials by mail, you can do so through international mail, professional courier service, or through U.S. Embassy Copenhagen’s diplomatic pouch which provides free mail service.  You will need to place your ballots in postage paid envelopes or in envelopes bearing sufficient U.S. postage, in order for them to be delivered to the proper local election authorities once received by the U.S. sorting facility.If using the diplomatic pouch, ballots can be dropped off to the American Citizens Services section by dropping ballots at the Embassy’s Consular Section Monday through Thursday between 8:15am – 12:00pm. Please note that all visitors to the Embassy are subject to security screening and you will not be permitted to bring electronic devices, including cell phones, inside the facility.  Please note that it can take up to four weeks for mail to reach its destination if sent by an embassy or consulate via diplomatic pouch.  All overseas U.S. citizens are advised to submit their forms and ballots accordingly.  Ballots will be received and forwarded whenever submitted but you may want to consider using a courier service if submitting your ballot close to or after the stated delivery time for pouch mail.

Researching the Candidates and Issues:  Online Resources.  Go to the FVAP links page for helpful resources to aid your research of candidates and issues. Non-partisan information about candidates, their voting records, and their positions on issues are widely available and easy to obtain online. You can also read national and hometown newspapers online, or search the internet to locate articles and information. For information about election dates and deadlines, subscribe to FVAP’s Voting Alerts (vote@fvap.gov). Security Procedures at U.S. Embassy Copenhagen

  • Please have photo identification available to present to the guard. Once verified, the guard will begin the security scanning process, which is like that of most international airports.
  • When entering the security area, the guard will ask you to empty your pockets of all metal items and electronic items, no matter what size and shape – this includes USB drives. Belts with a metal buckle must also be removed.
  • Due to security restrictions, no portable computers, iPads, e-Readers (such as Kindles or Nooks) and large bags (back packs, suitcases, etc.) are allowed in the Embassy. These items cannot be stored with the guards.  If you bring a large electronic item, you will not be permitted entry and will need to reschedule your appointment.
  • No liquids are allowed in the Embassy, exemptions made for medications or infant and child nourishment.
  • All small electronic items, such as mobile phones, iPods, MP 3 players and USB keys, must be left with the guards. The items stay in the security area, where you may recover them upon your departure. The guard provides a receipt for your items. It is very important that you only bring the most necessary electronic items to the Embassy.
  • Knives and other weapon-like items are prohibited in the Embassy. If you have a knife or other weapon like item on your person or in your baggage, you must tell the guard. Any knife or other weapon like item found by the guard during the search will be confiscated and turned over to the Danish police.
  • After emptying your pockets, please walk through the metal detector. If cleared by the detector and the guard, you continue forward and may recover your non-electronic items.
