Message to U.S. Citizens:  Events Surrounding the Succession of the Danish Throne

Location:  Copenhagen, Denmark

Event:  The royal ceremonies and processions associated with Her Majesty Queen Margrethe’s abdication and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik’s succession to the Danish throne are scheduled to occur the afternoon of January 14 in and around Amalienborg and Christiansborg Palace in central Copenhagen.  In addition, TV 2 and DR will hold a tribute concert celebrating Queen Margaret II on January 12 at 7:30 p.m. in Kongens Nytorv Square.

Danish authorities anticipate a significant number of people will participate in these celebrations.  Expect restrictions for pedestrian and bicycle routes, road closures, changes to public transportation schedules, and limited parking within central Copenhagen.

Actions to Take:

  • Review the Royal House’s official program for information about royal ceremonies and processions and the announcements by TV 2 and DR for information about the January 12 tribute concert.
  • Check the Copenhagen police and municipality web pages for information and recommendations regarding road closures, bicycle restrictions, changes to traffic patterns, and parking restrictions.
  • Monitor the social media accounts of the Copenhagen police, municipality, and Danish Road Directorate for breaking news and developments and follow their instructions.
  • Be aware of your surroundings when traveling to tourist locations and crowded public venues.
